Barrett Prendergast oozes the kind of California vibes that only certain LA-dwellers can muster up. As the founder of Valleybrink Road, a floral design and luxury gifting company, she has created a one stop shop for all the things we want in a lifestyle brand. Barrett talks to us about the ‘why’ behind turning her hobby for entertaining into a fully-fledged business, and how that weaves into pursuing her vision on a daily basis.
BARRETT, FIRST OF ALL, CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF VALLEYBRINK ROAD, AS WELL AS THE ETHOS BEHIND THE COMPANY?
Valleybrink Road is a boutique floral design and luxury gifting company. As a florist, gifter, and lifestyle curator, our company is an extension of my love for entertaining and creating the perfect gift. We are dedicated to creating unique and memorable moments for our clients and the people in their lives.
WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR A BIT ABOUT THE JOURNEY THAT BROUGHT YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD A KEEN EYE FOR FLORAL DESIGN AND A LOVE FOR ENTERTAINING?
Entertaining and cooking were always my hobbies, things I did on the weekends in my twenties when I wasn’t working in fashion. When I turned thirty, I was at a professional crossroads, and decided to explore turning these hobbies into something that could actually support me. A few months later, Valleybrink Road was born. It has gone through many phases and grown organically over the past six years. I feel very blessed to be able to be creative and do something I love everyday.
WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES YOU FACED WHEN STARTING YOUR OWN COMPANY AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
The biggest challenge for me was learning how to delegate and trust in other people to help grow Valleybrink Road. I was doing every single thing in the beginning, but of course, this is not sustainable as a business grows. Once I was able to embrace that growth and trust in others to help me, everything changed for the better.
IF YOU COULD TAKE A BIRDS EYE VIEW, WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?
I do what I do because I love being a female entrepreneur and a creative. I love that I get to work with my husband and build something that is our own.
WHO ARE SOME OTHER FEMALE FOUNDERS, LIKE YOURSELF, THAT INSPIRE YOU AND WHY?
I feel blessed to have so many inspiring female founders in my life. Sarah Gibson Tuttle of Olive & June, Sonja Teri Bowers of Poster Child Prints, Royale Ziegler of But First Party, Sue Tsai of Nico Nico Clothing, Rachel Pally of Rachel Pally, Mariana Orkenyi of Communal LA. They all are so gracefully finding that balance between motherhood and running your own company.
WHAT IS YOUR PERFECT DAY IN LOS ANGELES?
Perfect day (which I just had on my birthday last week ) starts with cuddles and coffee with my boys, then a workout class at Bar Method in Silverlake, Chocolate Croissants from Konbi, a movie, a Turkey Sandwich at All Time, a mani/pedi at Olive & June, and then home for dinner and bedtime with my boys.
